BUDDHA GAUTAMA
Gautama
Buddha's teachings can survive brilliantly in the face of various scientific
advances. There are enough scientific discoveries to prove that the Buddha's
Teachings of the past twenty-five centuries have been proved to have been
properly described by the Buddha Gautama. It is also recognized by the famous
scientist Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955) who mentions "only Buddhism that
can answer the needs of modern science .
The
principles of the Buddha's core teachings of Love and Compassion [Maitri
Karuna] have a revolutionary power to stimulate society with its environment
toward goodness. Gautama Buddha's teaching is believed to be a doctrine that
directs world peace with the sacred motto of Compassion and Love without
distinction.
Gautama
Buddha's universal teachings can thrive and be accepted by various cultures, as
the successors of this Teachings are able to make adjustments in disseminating
the Teach according to local culture and customs.
King
Suddhodana Gautama with his exquisite Ms. Dewi Mahamaya ruled the kingdom in
Kapilawastu in the southern Himalayas with justice and wisdom. Although married
for 20 years, but has not been blessed with a son. Until one night, Dewi
Mahamaya dreamed of seeing a white elephant who for then consort and then
pregnant.
According
to the prevailing customs, the empress should give birth in the home of his
parents, so that at the time of giving birth, go Mahamaya to the palace of his
parents in the kingdom of Koliya. On the way, Dewi Mahamaya stopped to rest in
Lumbini park. At the time of rest, his son was born.
Everyone
was happy, even the heavens and the earth seemed to also welcome his joy over
the birth of his son who fell during the month of Purnama Siddhi in Waisak
month (Mahayana Buddhism version, 566 BC 8th day of the fourth month according
to the lunar calendar. World Fellowship of Buddhist, May 623 BC).
On
the fifth day of the Prince's birth, the king gave his son Siddhartha the name,
which means 'to reach his goal'. Dewi Mahamaya died a week after giving birth
to her son. Her sister, Dewi Mahaprajapati, was then handed over to the task
and responsibility of raising and educating Prince Siddharta.
One
day, Asita's ascetic who dwells in the mountains near the palace of the king
Suddhodana notices the light that shines brightly in the palace and decides to
visit the palace. The king welcomed Asita's ascetic while showing his son. As
soon as he saw Prince Siddharta, Asita's ascetic wept and said, "Too bad, I am old, I will not receive the Buddha's
teachings, oh!" (Buddha comes from Budh, meaning consciousness)
Buddha means one who has reached consciousness perfect). The king was surprised
and asked for further explanation from Asita's ascetic who added, "Later he will leave the palace to go ascetic looking for
perfect consciousness.Sam should be happy, because the Prince is the Gem of the
World that is able to liberate beings from suffering He is the eternal light of
the world that never go away ".
Asita's
ascetic words make you uneasy day and night, for fear that her only son will
leave the palace and become a hermit, wandering without shelter. For this you
have chosen many servants to take care of Prince Siddhartha, so that his only
son will enjoy this worldly life. All forms of suffering tried to be removed
from Prince Siddhartha's life, such as sickness, old age, and death. So Prince
only knows worldly pleasures.
In
the Age of 7 years Prince Siddharta has studied various sciences. But Prince
Siddharta was less interested in the lesson. Prince Siddharta inhabits three
palaces, the spring palace, the rainy season and the transition. For 10 years
the Prince Siddharta lived in worldly pleasures.
One
day Prince Siddhartha asked for permission to walk outside the palace, where on
different occasions he saw the Four Significant Conditions - the parents, the
sick, the dead and the saints. So Prince Siddhartha grieved and asked himself,
"What is the meaning of this life, if all will
suffer sickness, old age and death, especially those who ask for help to those
who do not understand, who both do not know and are bound by everything
something of a temporary nature! ". Prince Siddhartha thought that
only the holy life would give all of those answers.
Prince
Siddhartha's inner turmoil continued until he was 29 years old, just as his
only son Rahula was born. One night, Prince Siddhartha decided to leave his
palace and accompanied by his coachman Canna. His determination has been
unanimous to do the Great Release by living as a hermit.
In
his wandering, the ascetic Gautama studied the ascetic exercises of the ascetic
Bhagava and then deepened the ascetic ways of two other ascetics, namely the
ascetic Alara Kalama and the Udraka Ramputra hermit. But after learning how to
meditate from both teachers, still has not found the answer he wanted. So
realize the ascetic Gautama that in such a way implies will not achieve the
Perfect Enlightenment.
Then
the ascetic Gautama left his two teachers and went to Magada to perform a
tortured ascetic himself in the Uruwela forest, on the banks of the Nairanjana
river that flows near the Gaya forest. Despite his six years of self-torture in
the Uruwela forest, the Gautama ascetic still can not understand the nature and
purpose of the hermitage.
One
day the monk Gautama in his hermitage heard an old man advising his son on a
boat that crossed the Nairanjana river by saying, "If the string is tightened, the voice will be higher, and if it is
tightened, break the string, and the sound of the harp disappears. If this
string of lyres is loosened, the voice will be lowered, and if it is too much,
then the sound of the harp disappears."
The
advice was very meaningful to the Gautama ascetic who finally decided to stop
his tapanya and went to the river to bathe. His bone-dwelling body was barely
able to sustain Gautama's ascetic body. A woman named Sujata gave Gautama a
hermit a bowl of milk. His body felt very weak and death almost took his soul,
but with a strong will of steel, the ascetic Gautama continued his samadhi
under the Bodhi tree (Asetta) in the forest of Gaya, while pretending, "Though my blood dries up, my flesh rots, the bones are
scattered, I will not leave this place until I reach the Perfect Enlightenment."
Feeling
hesitant and hesitant over the ascetic Gautama, he almost despaired against the
temptation of Mara, the devil's great devil. With a strong will of steel and
with firm faith, finally Mara's temptation can be resisted and conquered. This
occurs when the morning star shows itself on the eastern horizon. Now the
ascetic Gautama became bright and clear, as bright as the dawn of dawn on the
eastern horizon. The ascetic Gautama had attained the Perfect Enlightenment and
became Samyaksam-Buddha [Sammasam-Buddha], just at the Purnama Raya moon in
Waisak when he was 35 years old (according to Mahayana Buddhism version 531 BC
on the 8th day of the 12th month, according to Lunar calendar version of WFB,
in May of 588 BC). At the time of attaining the Perfect Enlightenment, of His
body emits six Buddha rays [Buddharasmi] in a Blue color which means bhakti;
Yellow means wisdom and knowledge; Red which means compassion and compassion;
White has a sacred meaning; Orange means enterprising; and the fifth mixture of
the rays.
After
attaining the Perfect Enlightenment, the ascetic Gautama received a degree of
perfection, among others: Gautama Buddha,
Shakyamuni Buddha, Tathagata ('He Who Came', He Who Has Been '), Sugata (' The
All-Knowing One '), Bhagava (' The Great ') etc. The five ascetics who
accompanied him in the jungle of Uruwela were the first disciples of the Buddha
who listened to the first sermon [Dharmacakra Pravartana / Dhammacakka
Pavattana], where he described the Middle Way he found, the Eight Paths of
Glory, including the beginning of his preaching that explains the Four Noble
Truths.
Gautama
Buddha traveled to spread the Dharma for forty-five years to mankind with
compassion and affection until he reached the age of 80, where he knew that in
three months he would be Parinibbana.
The
Buddha in sickness lay between two Sala trees in Kusinagara, giving the last
Dharma sermon to His disciples, then Parinibbana (version of Mahayana Buddhism,
486 BC on the 15th day of the 2nd month of the Lunar calendar WFB version in May,
543 BC).
The
last Gautama Buddha Sermon contains a very deep meaning for His disciples,
which include:
•
Believe in yourself in developing the Teachings of the Buddha.
•
Make the Buddha's Teaching (Dharma) a life of enlightenment.
•
Everything does not last forever.
•
The purpose of the Buddha's Teaching (Dharma) is to control the mind.
•
The mind can make a person a Buddha, but the mind can be
make
someone a beast.
•
Should respect each other and be able to avoid any kind of dispute.
•
When neglecting the Buddha's Teachings, it can mean having never met the
Buddha.
•
Mara (demons) and the desires of worldly lust are always looking for
opportunities to deceive the human race.
•
Death is only the destruction of the body.
•
The true Buddha is not a human body, but the Perfect Enlightenment.
•
The Perfect Wisdom born of Enlightenment will live forever in the Truth.
•
Only those who understand, who live and practice the Dharma will see the
Buddha.
•
The teachings given by the Buddha are not kept secret, covered up or enveloped.
The
Buddha said, "Listen well, monks, I tell you:
It will rot all the things that are formed, fight with awareness!"
(Digha Nikaya II, 156)
